I was born and raised in Southern England and in my early teens I moved to South Wales. I have three main passions in life; my family, the wonderful world of whisky and football (in particular, Southampton FC). There's nothing better than being able to combine all three, although it'll be a good few years before our daughter joins us for a whisky on match day!

I studied Recreation & Leisure Management at UWIC, (University of Wales, Institute Cardiff). I completed my studies as an exchange student in Finland, and before long had landed a job as a Bartender at Planet Hollywood Helsinki. I ended my time in Helsinki, (4 fun filled years) as a Bartender at Starwood's Hotel Kämp, and then went on to sail the seas with Crystal Cruises. It was onboard that very ship that I met my wife, who convinced me to move to her native Sweden.

I have lived in Stockholm for the past 7 years, working primarily within the Hotel and Restaurant Industry as well as Sales and Marketing. I recently joined Berntson AB as Sweden's Brand Ambassador for Glenfiddich, a role in which I take great pride and pleasure.

Our friends in America have just released a very nifty piece of software. The Glenfiddich Desktop Clock is a downloadable programme consisting of a series of pictures which were all taken in and around our distillery in Dufftown. Local photographer John Paul took on the challenge of sourcing the 720 pictures needed to illustrate every minute of a 12-hour clock – quite a task considering he was asked for every picture to contain numbers relating to the time they were meant to demonstrate (e.g. 247 for 2.47pm)! The result is a small clock which sits on your desktop and synchronises with your computer. As minutes pass, new pictures appear.

A word of warning though. Before you hit the download button - it can be distracting if, like me, you try to guess where all the pictures were taken. I’ve worked here for eight years but it seems I haven’t visited every place yet, as some of the pictures remain a mystery to me. I’ll need to have a word with John!

To download the Glenfiddich clock, please visit the 'Fiddich Fellowship website, which I introduced some time ago on this blog. The address is www.fiddichfellowship.com. Enjoy!

Best regards,

The fifth release of Glenfiddich Rare Collection 40 Year Old is about to hit the shelves... but not without a thought for our dear friend Michael Jackson, who had written tasting notes for each of the first four vattings, before sadly passing away in the summer of 2007.

Michael’s friend and fellow whisky writer Dave Broom of Wine & Spirit magazine has kindly agreed to create tasting notes for this fifth bottling. Dave has hailed the new edition as ‘a remarkable whisky’, so it’s a fitting creation for a remarkable man.

To produce this new release, David Stewart selected five casks - a mixture of American and Spanish oak - and blended them together with the remnants of the previous 40 Year Old vatting, which contains whiskies first distilled more than 80 years ago. Using this remnant ensures consistency as whiskies of this age are incredibly powerful, with even a small amount significantly impacting upon aroma and taste profiles.

The Glenfiddich Rare Collection 40 Year Old was bottled at the natural strength of 45.4%ABV and is limited to 600 bottles.

In 2007, the fourth release was awarded a Gold (Best in Class) medal by the International Wine and Spirit Competition.

As you may have seen in the news, Heathrow's new wing - Terminal 5 - will open tomorrow after five years in construction. To celebrate this historic event, our malt master David Stewart has selected a single 1973 American oak cask, which will be sold exclusively at the new terminal from tomorrow.

Cask number 28553, which was filled with new-make Glenfiddich spirit on 24th September 1973, was matured for more than 34 years. Over this long period of time, the whisky has developed a rich, silky sweet flavour with hints of spice and oak.

For those of you who might be passing by Heathrow before the end of April, please note that you will only be able to take a look at our new vintage at World of Whiskies' new T5 shop. However from May, it will also become available in other selected World of Whiskies' shops. Bottled at 48% ABV, it is a limited edition of 177 bottles which will retail at £1,000 each.

Best regards,

Ray Pearson, our ambassador in California, is the proud owner of the coveted car registration number ‘Fiddich’ (as seen on the picture below). Ray secured the distinctive plate two years ago and he says the only drawback comes from whisky fans who keep asking him for free samples. However, I do wonder whether the name would also attract more attention from the police... Let’s hope not!

Those of you who enjoy the technical side of whisky making may be interested to know that six of our fermentation vessels, known as washbacks, are currently being replaced as part of our winter maintenance schedule.

Wooden washbacks - made of Douglas fir - have a life span of around 30 years, and although they have been gradually replaced by stainless steel vessels at most distilleries, Glenfiddich’s new washbacks will remain traditional (as seen on the picture below). Using stainless steel would have been more convenient of course (easier cleaning, longer life span, etc…), but we believe wood plays a noticeable part in the final character of our single malt.

Most of our 24 washbacks are made of around 90 five-meter staves and have a full capacity of around 65,000 litres. However, we usually only fill them with around 50,000 litres to allow for the natural appearance of foam during the three-day fermentation process.

Our shiny new washbacks should be in place by the end of April so please don’t hesitate to drop in for a quick look around.

Best regards,

As part of our series of interviews with our longest serving employees, I would like to introduce you today to our Head Warehouseman, Eric Stephen, who has been working at Glenfiddich since 1962.

Ludo - Eric, could you please tell us a bit about yourself?

Eric - My name is Eric and I have been working at Glenfiddich for over 45 years. I started as a labourer in October 1962, aged 18. My main job was to empty coal wagons. Remember in those days, our stills were fired by coal, and the coal was delivered by train, every day.

Ludo – Sounds like a tough job!

Eric - It was alright in the summer but really tough in the winter! The rail tracks were often covered in snow or frozen over. Moving to gas was definitely the right thing to do!

Ludo – What did you do next?

Eric - Emptying coal wagons was only part of my job, I also helped in the warehouses and of course, I used to have to empty the Mash Tun, which was done by hand in those days.

Ludo - So when did you start working full-time in our warehouses?

Eric - It must have been a few months later, in the summer of 1963, I think.

Ludo - Can you remember how many warehouses there were in those days?

Eric - 27 in total, which is slightly less than the 45 we have now!

Ludo - So you’ve basically spent 45 years working in our warehouses, eventually becoming Head Warehouseman in 1967. Do you know where every single cask is kept?

Eric - I used to. When I started there were no computers, so all the details were kept on cards and books. It was quite a job keeping them updated. And the excise men were always on your back, making sure every detail was kept in order.

Ludo - What happened to the Excise men? They don’t work here anymore.

Eric - The Excise men were gradually phased out and were replaced by Revenue Assistants who basically checked our stock records at key process moments. But legislations changed and Revenue Assistants also gradually moved out of distilleries. They now only visit us every now and then.

Ludo - Did you always get on well with them?

Eric – Absolutely! Both parties had to keep their distances, for obvious reasons, but we never had any issues.

Ludo - Has a lot changed this you’ve been here Eric?

Eric – Yes, quite a lot. The culture has changed for a start. In those days everybody worked together. It didn’t matter what your role was. If a hand was needed in any area, you just helped out. Now, every one has their own responsibilities and it’s much more difficult to move from one area to another.
Also, Health & Safety has made our job much safer and easier.

Ludo – I must say 45 years’ service is very impressive. What are you the most proud of?

Eric - Working on the Solera project. I remember when we filled the vat for the first time in 1997, no-one would have imagined that this new product would become so popular. We only started with 9 Marrying Tuns and we now have 99!
Also, generally speaking, working for William Grant’s as a whole. The family has always been good to me, and my father, daughter and son have also worked here. I have lots of good memories indeed!

Ludo – Eric, a final question, if you could have a dram with William Grant, what would it be?

Eric - Glenfiddich 15 Years Old. It has to be, hasn’t it?! And a large one!

Ludo – Thank you very much for your time Eric!

Please use the comments form below if there are any more questions you would like to ask Eric. Eric will personally respond to you.

On behalf of everybody here in Dufftown, I would like to wish you all a very happy new year! Most of our craftsmen are now back at Glenfiddich and although maintenance work continues, we have just started distilling again. If all goes well, we should be back in full production in the next few weeks. Our Visitor Centre has also reopened its doors so please, do drop in for a dram!

Best wishes,

I must be honest with you. As I sit in my hotel lobby in Saipan, where the temperature must be well above 30 degrees, I am finding it hard to believe that this is my last day at work before the holidays. But here we are, December 20th! Tomorrow, I will be flying home and in a few days, the New Year will be upon us. To mark the festivities, Glenfiddich has created two new ads which will appear in a number of magazines and newspapers over the season. If you haven't seen them before, please take a look below and feel free to share your thoughts (or New Year’s resolutions ;-) with us!

2007 was not only our distillery's 120th anniversary, but also a phenomenal year in terms of recognition. After Glenfiddich won an incredible four gold medals at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in June, William Grant and Sons recently scooped our most prestigious award of all - ‘Worldwide Distiller of the Year’. This early Christmas present was proudly received by our Malt Master, David Stewart, who dedicated this staggering achievement to the whole Glenfiddich community: ‘From the distillery warehousemen to our network of distributors, we should all be giving each other a pat on the back’.

I couldn't have said it better, well done everyone!
